Emily Gause was recently recognized with the Anthony Savage Award for her work in USA v Frazier, a serious felony case in the Western District of Washington. This honor is given by the Washington Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers recognizing outstanding trial results from young attorneys.
Emily’s work resulted in complete dismissal of the case- a rare result in federal court. She exposed serious credibility issues with the government’s only witness, a confidential informant with a long criminal past.
Here’s her story:
Quentin: What made this case such a challenge?
Emily: Federal cases in general are very, very difficult. The government has overwhelming evidence against one’s client and they are accused of very bad things, so getting a case dismissed is exceptionally hard to do.
Q: How did it feel to hear you had won?
E: When I heard that my client’s charges were flat out dropped, I was absolutely stunned. I remember hearing it and not quite grasping it and my mouth dropping open. I couldn’t stop smiling for days after!
Q: Do you have any advice for other young professionals?
E: Follow your passion and do the type of work that makes you the happiest. When you’re doing work that brings you energy and happiness, the rest will follow.
Q: One last crucial question… Do you have a guilty pleasure TV show?
E: Scandal!
