Hispanic Heritage Month in Seattle (September 15 – October 15) is a great time to not only embrace the rich cultural contributions of the Hispanic and Latinx communities but also support local small businesses and cultural events. Seattle might not have the year-round sunshine of Latin America, but it does have a wealth of vibrant local businesses that can transport you there. From authentic eateries serving tamales that could bring a tear to your eye (or spice to your mouth) to pop-up markets showcasing handmade crafts, there's no shortage of ways to engage with Hispanic culture right here in the Pacific Northwest.
And let’s not forget the cultural events. Dance performances, art exhibits, and music festivals all give you a taste of the rich diversity that Hispanic Heritage Month celebrates. So, whether you’re attending an outdoor salsa concert or buying the perfect set of ceramic salsa bowls from a local artisan, supporting small Hispanic-owned businesses and cultural initiatives isn't just a good time—it's a way to keep Seattle’s cultural landscape spicy, vibrant, and thriving.

Band members and business partners Pedrito Vargas and Pancho Chaves opened Cafe Con Leche in 2012, and is now run by Pancho and his team. Pedrito and Pancho wanted a space big enough to play live music and to run an authentic Cuban restaurant. Many of the recipes served at Cafe Con Leche come from Pedrito’s family. Stop by to try Cuban-pressed sandwiches, empanadas, and maduros in Cafe Con Leche’s bright, beautiful space.
Capitol Hill locals know the best taco joints are always slammed, and Carmelo’s Tacos is no different. Tucked inside Hillcrest Market, Carmelo Gaspar’s Mexico City-style taco stand is ready to serve you a fresh corn tortilla packed with sizzling chorizo. Whether you’re craving one of the two veggie options or diving into Carmelo’s melt-in-your-mouth meats, your taste buds are in for a fiesta.
Courtney Anaya and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt Arthur Ruff, who’d already made waves with Ruffhouse Jiu Jitsu, teamed up to give Courtney’s childhood dojo a major glow-up with Ruffhouse Renton. Think of it as a dojo where tough love comes with a side of serious skill-building. The place is all about personalized attention, mixing traditional martial arts—like Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Muay Thai, and Filipino Martial Arts—with rigorous fitness and character development. Born from the passions of Ralph and Gabi Green, this café-nursery-tattoo studio is the vibrant evolution of their earlier ventures, Brother Ralph Tattoo and Pa' La Gente Café. After a detour through Idaho and some unexpected bumps in the road, they’ve planted their dream back in Seattle, where it’s thriving.
